The announcement of Wolfenstein: Youngblood’s release date in March was also accompanied by the confirmation of a physical and digital release of the game for Nintendo Switch. Both DOOM and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus made their way to the hybrid console, so it made sense for Bethesda’s latest title to follow suit. Unfortunately, it seems like the physical version of Wolfenstein: Youngblood for Nintendo Switch will not come on a cartridge.
Instead, those who pick up Wolfenstein: Youngblood for Nintendo Switch at retail will be greeted with a download code once they open the box. This detail was first spotted by Nintendo Everything, who were tipped off to the fact that Wolfenstein: Youngblood’s GameStop listing states “No cartridge for this game. Code will be packed in box. Internet connection required.”
Following this, DualShockers proceeded to check Amazon and Walmart, and both ended up stating the same thing in regards to the Nintendo Switch version of the game. DualShockers has reached out to Bethesda for confirmation, and will update this article when they respond.
While this news may be disappointing to those that like to collect physical versions of games, it isn’t a first for Nintendo Switch. Titles like Mega Man Legacy Collection 1+2 and the upcoming Resident Evil Origins Collection for Nintendo Switch require that players download one of two games included in those packages. Nintendo Switch cartridges are notorious for being expensive, especially when the games in question take up more space, so it makes sense as to why Bethesda would’ve made this decision.
For those that are still okay with picking up the Nintendo Switch version of the game following this development, it is currently available to pre-order on Amazon. Wolfenstein: Youngblood will release for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on July 26.
