After several years in development by Overkill Software and being published by Starbreeze Studios, the long-awaited Overkill’s The Walking Dead released last November to middling reception from both critics and players. Though support for the game seemed to be in the pipeline for at least the rest of the year alongside console versions of the game on PS4 and Xbox One, it appears those plans are coming to an abrupt end from The Walking Dead IP holder Skybound Entertainment.

In a statement from Skybound Entertainment today, the company announced that it had terminated its contract with Starbreeze Studios and will “discontinue all efforts on Overkill’s The Walking Dead.” Given the circumstances, this means that the console versions of the game for PS4 and Xbox One have been effectively cancelled, and that future support for the game’s release on PC will be ended.

According to Skybound, the company said that it “did our best to work with Starbreeze and resolve many issues that we saw with the game,” but added that “ultimately Overkill’s The Walking Dead did not meet our standards nor is it the quality that we were promised.”

While the game’s future development and support have seemingly come to an end, Skybound concluded its statement by saying that it would remain “dedicated to providing fans with the most premium quality content we can offer,” and that it would explore other options to develop games based around The Walking Dead franchise.

Outside of the prolonged development history and troubles that Overkill’s The Walking Dead endured over the years, the release of the game also had its apparent troubles coming from publisher Starbreeze Studios itself. Just last week, the company assured that development on the console versions of the game was continuing as planned despite reports that the PlayStation Store was issuing refunds to players that preordered the game on PS4.

Likewise, Starbreeze Studios had some troubles rise at the end of last year when the company’s offices were raided by Swedish authorities under the suspicion of insider trading, leading to the arrest of one individual associated with the charges brought forth.
