E3 2018 is back and each year is like Christmas for gamers. Dozens upon dozens of new game reveals, announcements, demos, and many, many surprises are shared between some of the biggest names in the games industry, and E3 2018 certainly delivered all that and more.
After EA, Bethesda, Microsoft, Square Enix, Ubisoft, Sony, and Nintendo all presented their press conferences and offered an in-depth look at what lies ahead for the coming years, we’re looking back on our staff predictions for what we were expecting (or hoping for) at this year’s show. Throughout the past few weeks, the DualShockers‘ staff shared their thoughts in our “E3 Dreams” editorial series, where we each predicted a title or announcement that we hoped would come to pass.
So, now that the conferences are over, how did we do? Read on below for the verdict of whether our E3 Dreams for 2018 actually turned out to be reality – you can also click on each headline to head back into the editorial itself and see how right (or wrong) we ended up getting things.
E3 2018 Dreams — I Hope Microsoft Will Show Us a New Side of the Halo Universe
The Verdict: This might have come true? Microsoft did make an announcement for the series with the debut of Halo Infinite. However, right now we don’t know all too much about the game, other than it will obviously feature the series’ main man Master Chief, and that it will be utilizing a new engine called the SlipSpace Engine. For all we know, this most likely will be a title that may not be coming to the Xbox One, but instead to the next generation of Xbox console.
E3 2018 Dreams — I Want a First Look at Fire Emblem Gracing the Nintendo Switch
The Verdict: Yep, this happened! We officially got our first look at the first mainline Fire Emblem game coming to the Nintendo Switch, which is called Fire Emblem: Three Houses. As expected, the game’s reveal gave us a good indication of what to expect from the series making the jump to a new platform, and the game is expected to arrive sometime in spring 2019.
E3 2018 Dreams — I Hope That Skate 4 is Finally Revealed
The Verdict: Sadly, this dream did not come to pass. Despite fervent fan requests, Skate 4 was not announced by EA as many hoped for. However, we did got somewhat of a consolation prize in the form of Session, an upcoming skateboarding title (and apparent Skate spiritual successor) that got a new trailer at Microsoft’s E3 2018 press conference.
E3 2018 Dreams — I Want Ghost of Tsushima to Be the Samurai Game I’ve Always Dreamt Of
The Verdict: Boy did this happen. At Sony’s E3 2018 press conference, we finally got an extensive first gameplay look at Ghost of Tsushima, which we knew going in would be at the event. However, we didn’t expect Sucker Punch’s upcoming title to deliver such a stunning presentation at the show. No release window has been confirmed for the title at this time, though, so we’ll have to wait and see when the game is actually coming out.
E3 2018 Dreams — I Want a Full Reveal & Demo of The Last of Us: Part II
The Verdict: We sure did see more from the game. We knew Naughty Dog’s next masterpiece in the making would be at Sony’s E3 2018 press conference, and the presentation gave us our very first look at its gameplay. The video showcased more of the brutal violence that we’ve seen from the game’s past two showings, but this time around also highlighted a bit more of the human elements that have made The Last of Us so poignant and emotional.
E3 2018 Dreams — I’m Standing By for a Titanfall 3 Announcement
The Verdict: Sadly, we have to keep standing by for this one, as EA did not reveal Titanfall 3 as some might have hoped. Respawn Entertainment teased beforehand that it would have a small bit of info about one of its next projects, but that (as expected) turned out to be for its upcoming Star Wars project, which we now know is called Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and takes place in the interim between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.
E3 2018 Dreams — After Waiting Over a Decade, It’s Time for Kingdom Hearts III to Get a Release Date
The Verdict: Yep! We now know that the very, very long-awaited Kingdom Hearts III does finally have a release confirmed in January 2019. While the release date misses its originally-planned window of sometime later this year, at least Kingdom Hearts fans can rest a little easier knowing that the long-awaited next main installment in the series is finally coming.
