DOOM Eternal is still on route to land on March 20, and as far as we know, it’s still on route to be incredibly skull-crushing, limb-ripping, and a total gore-heavy splash-fest. However, if you’re not in the know about what DOOM even is, you’d be fooled into thinking it was just a simple action game thanks to Bethesda’s TV spot.
For obvious reasons, displaying graphic violence and dismemberment to the extents DOOM Eternal shows would go against advertising regulations. At least, they would if it was shown pre-watershed. It looks like Bethesda wants to get the word out about the upcoming title before the watershed and so, have broadcast an incredibly toned down version of the game. The game itself has been rated Mature by the ESRB.
There’s no gunfire, no limbs being ripped from their joints, no blood splashing out over the floor, no bodies exploding into a cloud of gore. Instead, there’s a weird soundtrack, moving shots of Doomslayer wandering about the environment, and really, it just makes the game look incredibly tame. There is some degree of violence, one demon gets strangled, another has its incoming punch blocked by Doomslayer.
However, if you’re wanting to watch this and expect any new footage that’s filled with blood and action, this isn’t it. But you can watch our gameplay video captured from the pre-launch preview event.
DOOM Eternal is due to launch on the same day Animal Crossing: New Horizons launches, so you can expect to see a mixture of cuteness and demonic hell shared around online on March 20.
