Yuji Horii, the key developer of Square Enix’ Dragon Quest JRPG series, shared some words of celebrations on Twitter as we reached 2020. In his tweet, he mentioned how Dragon Quest XII is still a little bit further ahead, and how something else might end up releasing before it. This means Square Enix won’t be officially announcing Dragon Quest 12 and showing us what the game looks like anytime soon.

What’s interesting with this message from Yuji Horii is how this confirms the newly announced Dragon Quest The Adventure of Dai game is an actual different project than Dragon Quest 12. Square Enix was previously recruiting for a future Dragon Quest game, hinting at Dragon Quest XII, but when the new Dragon Quest Dai no Daibouken game got announced, I personally thought that was one and the same project. Turns out I was wrong.

In summary, Square Enix is currently working on at least two different Dragon Quest games, the Dragon Quest Dai no Daibouken game, and Dragon Quest 12. The other thing which should release before DQ XII that Horii mentioned can either be Dragon Quest Dai no Daibouken game or another unrevealed third game.

Back in December 2018, Yuji Horii mentioned how Dragon Quest XII is still many years ahead. Level-5 and its president Akihiro Hino,  who developed the original Dragon Quest IX on Nintendo DS, hinted at the game’s 10th-anniversary event that a Dragon Quest IX remake on Switch could happen The last main game we got is Dragon Quest XI S on Switch, which you can check our review of. We also recently heard about a possible Dragon Quest Heroes 3
