After a few days of teasing, developer Playtonic and publisher Team17 have announced the follow-up to 2017’s Yooka-Laylee. Yooka-Laylee and The Impossible Lair switches things up for the series. This time out, you’ll control Yooka-Laylee through challenging 2.5D levels and explore a 3D overworld with fun puzzles to solve. Watch the reveal trailer below.

The first game was a solid 3D-platformer full of nostalgia. Yooka-Laylee‘s first adventure sold over a million copies, so it’s not surprising to see a follow-up. The surprising part is that the team at Playtonic are going away from 3D platforming and taking the series to the second(.5) dimension.

That said, the levels still look beautiful. I’m a big fan of this art style that harkens back to the old 3D platformers while not looking like the muddy mess those N64 games often were. Yooka-Laylee is crisp and visually striking. It would not look out of place next to most Nintendo-developed games.

However, the levels can look as gorgeous as they want. What matters is how they play. It will be interesting to see how the devs handle the switch to 2.5D. For my money, 3D platformers can be a little floatier than their 2.5D counterparts. I’m hoping the team brings tighter controls to The Impossible Lair.

By taking the game away from 3D, the game loses part of what made it special. In 2017, there were no other 3D platformers. In 2019, there are quite a few 2.5D platformers on the indie scene. I’m curious to see how successful this new game is without the 3D “gimmick”.

We’ll find out how it performs soon. Yooka-Laylee and The Impossible Lair is coming to Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One this year.
