Yakuza: Like a Dragon Tops the Japanese Sales Chart in First Week

Yakuza: Like a Dragon launched in Japan on January 16. According to Famitsu’s estimated physical sales chart, the game is the top-selling game in Japan during its first week out. While the overall numbers aren’t quite up to the franchise’s highs from the PS3 era, this is still promising news in light of the studio choosing to take the game in a different direction for the seventh installment.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon sold an estimated 156,993 thus far, which was enough to put it over games like Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot and Pokemon Sword and Shield. It also puts the game ahead of both Judgment and Yakuza: Kiwami 2 in terms of first-week sales. However, Yakuza 7 was not able to top Yakuza 6: The Song of Life in the same metric.

As mentioned, this shows that the devs choice to switch from action-based combat to a turn-based battle system didn’t impact sales negatively. And, with the series continuing to pick up momentum in the West, these numbers will only jump higher. It might not hit the overall numbers the older entries did in Japan. That said, it doesn’t really need to. This is a worldwide franchise now. Hopefully, the Western sales continue to back that up.

Joining Yakuza: Like a Dragon as new games on the Famitsu sales chart areDBZ: Kakarot, Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV, and Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore. Ring Fit Adventure, Dr. Kawashima’s Brain Training, Minecraft, Mario Kart 8, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate make up the rest of the list.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon will release on PS4 in the West at some point later this year.
