Following reports that circled earlier this month, WWE officially announced recently that it will not be releasing WWE 2K21 this year.

The news came about during WWE’s latest earnings call where interim chief financial officer Frank Riddick clearly stated that, “there’s not going to be a launch of a game this year.” The cancellation of WWE 2K21 comes a year after 2K20 turned out to be one of the worst games in the franchise’s history in terms of critical reception. In our own review of the title last year, we scored it a 4/10/ noting that it was a buggy mess at launch.

While the cancellation of WWE 2K21 might seem like a sour note, 2K is insisting that it has some “exciting news” around the corner. This coming Monday, April 27, at 7:00am PST, new information on the future of the WWE 2K franchise is said to be divulged. Additionally, 2K teased that there will be another rousing reveal as well that might potentially excite fans.

So just what could this exciting announcement be? Well, it’s hard to say right now. One possibility could be the revival or return of an existing WWE video game franchise that might bridge the gap to the next formal wrestling sim. Properties like WWE All Stars were popular amongst fans and critics years back, but haven’t been seen or heard from in quite some time. It’s also possible that 2K Games could now decide to ditch the WWE 2K branding altogether, which is something WWE games are definitely familiar with.

Regardless of what will be announced in the coming days, we’ll keep you updated with the latest WWE video game news when it is revealed on Monday.
