World War Z finally has a release date: April 16, 2019.

This release date has been long awaited, as World War Z has had a long period from announcement to release. Even before the official announcement, Paramount Pictures, distributor for the World War Z film from 2013, registered a trademark for the title which included, “downloadable electronic game program, electronic game software, and video game cartridges/discs” leading to rumors of an adaptation. However that was in 2012 and it wasn’t until five years after we learned that deliberately infecting yourself with terminal illnesses was the solution to the zombie outbreak that a World War Z game was real.

Unfortunately the game isn’t about stabbing your veins with infected needles, instead it is about shooting and blowing up hordes of zombies. It was officially announced at The Game Awards 2017, coming from Saber Interactive, and featured the familiar sights of zombie pile-ups made famous by the film. Afterwards we got some screenshots, details on the Horde, those zombie pile-ups, more images, and Saber’s partnership with AMD to help with their multiplayer cooperative zombie shooter. World War Z is to launch with five modes of play as well as varying classes for players to utilize. Locations include New York City, Jerusalem, and Moscow, familiar locations to viewers of the film. The hordes of zombies seen in this game are reminiscent of Days Gone, Sony’s first party zombie game that features a similar horde of zombies chasing after the player.

Turns out the PC version will also be a Epic Games Store exclusive, which was announced earlier this week. That’s another get for Epic, who continues to try and horde as many titles as it can to promote its store in comparison to digital PC monopoly Steam. Epic has also been offering games for free as part of its platform, with Axiom Verge the current free game. There was a slight hiccup in Axiom Verge‘s rollout, however, as the game launched without a specific “Steam” file that caused it to crash. This was quickly fixed in an update the same day it was discovered.

World War Z will come to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PCs via the Epic Games Store on April 16, 2019.
