We Happy Few is far from the success that developer Compulsion Games wanted it to be.  However, the team did do a commendable job of keeping up support on the game well past its August 2018 release. In a recent interview with US Gamer, founder Guillame Provost spoke to how the team plans to use what they’ve learned as they start working on their next game universe.

We Happy Few always felt like a studio had bitten off a little more than they could chew. That’s not an indictment on Compulsion Games. In fact, as the interview details, it was more the expectations from fans ended up making it nearly impossible for the game to succeed. We Happy Few was originally conceived as a survival game. However, when people saw it, they immediately thought of narrative games like BioShock. And, as Provost said to US Gamer, “that’s an $80 million” game. Compulsion Games is simply not that sized studio. When they tried to merge the two, it just didn’t work that well.

That said, the studio did learn a ton during development. If they can leverage all of that for a more focused game, then this could turn into an overall win for the studio. Provost noted “there’s a hunger in the studio to apply all the knowledge that we’ve acquired to a new universe”. Considering how compelling the first looks of We Happy Few were, I’m excited to see what Compulsion Games does next.

We Happy Few is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
