Unravel Two Developer Explains That a Switch Version Would Have Taken “Another Half a Year or So” to Make

Coming as the follow-up to the beloved original, Unravel Two not only surprised audiences with its reveal last week that we’d be getting more of the lovable Yarnie, but also was a surprise in that the game was released right in the middle of the EA Play 2018 press conference. However, a noticeable detail was the fact that the game was not coming to Nintendo Switch, and now we know a bit more of why the game hasn’t arrived for Nintendo’s system.

Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, Coldwood Interactive producer Michael Gill shared some more insight into the development and release of Unravel Two, and addressed one of the more popular questions as to why the game didn’t arrive for Nintendo Switch.

Specifically, Gill gave an explanation that, ultimately, Unravel Two couldn’t arrive on Switch in time for the game’s surprise launch last week due mainly to the extra development time and resources it have have taken to adapt the game for the system.

Gill stated that developing a Switch version of the game “would have taken another half a year or so” on top of its originally-planned release platforms for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. A large portion of this, as his interview with GamesIndustry.biz explained, was that the game’s technical requirements go beyond its appearance as a “simple platformer,” as the game incorporates many different types of physics and effects in motion, such as the game’s environments and their detailed laters, and the yarn physics implemented on the game’s characters.

Gill himself even stated that the Switch is “a machine made for Unravel Two,” but ultimately said that it would have been “difficult” to adapt the game’s system requirements over on to the Switch, at least in the game’s current form on consoles and PC.

Unravel Two is available now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
