Sony Computer Entertainment released the PlayStation 2 in Japan on this day 20 years ago on March 4, 2000. To celebrate, the official PlayStationUK Twitter account is asking players what was the greatest PS2 game to launch.
While the initial prospect of the PS2 launching 20 years ago makes me feel incredibly old, the Tweet itself sparks even more nostalgia as the video shows the original boot screen block animation which transitions to the classic PlayStation 2 logo. Those sounds.

The PS2 didn’t hit America until October 26, 2000, but it did go on to become the best-selling console of all time and as of March 31, 2012, saw “More than 155.0 million” units sold. In comparison, the current generation PS4, as of December 2019, has sold 108.9 million units.
The PS2 also saw over 3,800 video games released onto the platform and by 2011 had sold over 1.5 billion copies.
The PS2 originally battled against Sega’s Dreamcast, Microsoft’s Xbox, and Nintendo’s Gamecube consoles. 20 years later, Sony is still up against Nintendo and Microsoft, but things are less exclusive now with players being able to play with friends on rival platforms thanks to cross-platform play.
While we may be looking back to the past to celebrate the PS2, This year, 2020, is the year that we also look forward to the next-generation PlayStation, aptly titled PS5. We’ll learn more about the new console as we grow nearer to its possible Holiday 2020 launch.
