From its titles like The Walking Dead series, The Wolf Among UsTales from the Borderlands, and more, Telltale Games defined itself as the home for engaging storytelling and characters, though as previous reports seem to have confirmed, the studio has unfortunately revealed that it will be closing down in the near future.

Following reports earlier today of major layoffs from within the company, Telltale Games confirmed in an official statement that the studio will “begin a majority studio closure,” with the studio explaining that it faced significant obstacles (mainly financially) in a year “marked by insurmountable challenges.”

Telltale detailed that while the majority of the company’s staff were let go today as a result of the closure, around 25 employees will remain with the company to fulfill final obligations, which some reports have said will be to finish development on what may be the company’s final project, The Walking Dead: The Final Season.

The company’s current CEO Pete Hawley explained in a statement that “it’s been an incredibly difficult year for Telltale as we worked to set the company on a new course,” and stated simply that the company “ran out of time to get there,” as the company notably faced layoffs last year and company-wide restructuring, in an attempt to recoup from financial struggles.

Despite the saddening news of the company’s impending closure, Hawley stated that “we released some of our best content this year and received a tremendous amount of positive feedback,” adding that he hopes for the company’s departing staff to “spread our brand of storytelling across the games industry.”

Telltale closed its statement by saying that further information and details on the studio’s slate of current and previously-announced projects will be provided “in the coming weeks.” You can find Telltale’s full statement below:
