As of early August, Tekken 7 had sold 1.66 million copies. That number roughly two months later has increased, surpassing two million copies sold in the process.
The news comes via the game’s director and producer, the one and only Katsuhiro Harada, who replied to a curious Twitter user with the information.
Over 2 million now (2017 June to September).
RT@NightmareSteam How many copies has Tekken 7 sold on consoles so far?— Katsuhiro Harada (@Harada_TEKKEN) October 10, 2017
Notably, the inquirer specifically mentions consoles rather than just all sales. That said, it is unclear if Harada included PC sales in his quoted two million, or if that is only counting sales on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. According to SteamSpy, the fighting game has sold over 311,000 copies on PC.
Bandai Namco had previously placed expectations for the latest and ninth installment in the iconic fighting game series of 2.1 million copies sold by the end of the fiscal year (March 31, 2018). It’s safe to bet that it will pass this figure (if it hasn’t already) by a very healthy margin. What this will mean for the series going forward remains to be seen, but its good to know Tekken still has considerable presence in not only the fighting gaming market, but the video games market as a whole.
Tekken 7, which launched back in June, is available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
