Team Fortress 2 has been updated to pay tribute to Rick May, the late voice of Soldier.

Valve released released the update on Friday, which, among a list of other fixes, changed the menu to show May’s character saluting while a Valve Orchestra-recorded version of “Taps” plays in the background. In addition, a statue of Soldier has been placed throughout the game’s maps, with a plaque bearing May’s name and the line “That was a hell of a campaign, son!”

Players quickly discovered that the statue also plays a list of May’s iconic lines as Soldier should you hang around it for long enough.

May passed away last month after contracting the coronavirus. He was 79.  The news was met with various tributes from fans, both in and outside of Team Fortress 2, and will undoubtedly continue on now that Valve has given players spots in-game to gather and mourn.

The tribute will last throughout the month of May, according to the in-game patch notes.

Thank you Valve. from r/tf2

My favorite game, my favorite map and my favorite class since 2012. While I’m still sad about what has happened I am happy to see the community and even Valve “coming together” for this. Thanks to everyone who has helped in turning this game and this community into what it is today. R.I.P. Rick may. from r/tf2

A career actor, May’s other video game roles included that of Dr. M in Sucker Punch’s Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves, Genghis Khan Ensemble Studios’ Age of Empires II, and perhaps just as notable as Soldier, Peppy Hare in Star Fox 64.

Godspeed.
