If all you wanted from a Nintendo Switch firmware update were folders and themes, prepare for disappointment. Version 7.0.0 is available through an update, providing new profile icons based on New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. Peachette fans, your time is now.
In addition to those icons, the system now supports Chinese, Korean, and Taiwanese through the system settings. Finally, we get that all too familiar “general system stability improvements to enhance the user’s experience” bit at the end.
In comparison, a 3.0.0 update from all the way back in summer of 2017 added several quality-of-life changes and additions, including the feature to add friends from your 3DS and Wii U lists, keyboard support, and news channels. The 6.0.0 update from last September added support for Nintendo Switch Online and the unexpected ability to play digital games you own from other consoles.
Despite a popular software and game library, the Switch still feels far behind other consoles in basic functionality. Themes consist of “light” and “dark,” features like folders that were in the 3DS and Wii U are not available, and only Hulu and YouTube are streaming services available on the console as of now.
Worst of all, there is still no eShop music.
Profile icons are cool, I guess. As mentioned, Peachette and the Super Crown is one of the many new icons (screenshot credit goes to Andres Lopez)—don’t expect a Bowsette icon, though. As some have pointed out on Twitter, the Switch doesn’t even have Super Smash Bros. Ultimate icons yet, despite being a huge blockbuster title that topped the charts last month.
But hey, beggars can’t be choosers, I suppose.
