Super Mario Bros. 35 is Out for Free on Switch Today, Only Available Until March

News, Nintendo, Originals, Super Mario Bros. 35, Switch

Even though the release of Super Mario 3D All-Stars seems to be the main way in which Nintendo has opted to celebrate the 35th anniversary of its most iconic character, the publisher has also whipped together another that is out right now.

Super Mario Bros. 35 is, bizarrely enough, a battle royale take on the side-scrolling games that started it all. Each match sees you squaring off against 34 other combatants who are each trying to make their way through a specific Super Mario Bros. level. As you kill enemies and advance onward, you’ll then be able to use those same enemies to invade the worlds of other players to make their own run more difficult. The last player left standing is then declared the winner. It’s a strange idea on paper, but one that seems like it could actually be quite enjoyable.

You can see the game in action right here in its new launch trailer:

The only strange thing about Super Mario Bros. 35 is that, like 3D All-Stars, the game will only be available for a limited time. From now until March 31, 2021, Super Mario Bros. 35 will be able to be downloaded and played by anyone, but after that time, it will be gone forever. This is a really strange thing that Nintendo keeps doing lately, and I’m not really sure why. While you could argue that Super Mario Bros. 35 is only meant to be around as part of the 35th anniversary of the original game in the franchise, I don’t see the point in locking it away forever after next March. Then again, maybe Nintendo will change its mind, much as it did with Jump Rope Challenge.

We should have some more opinionated thoughts on Super Mario Bros. 35 for you coming in the next few days, so stay tuned.
