After what seems like years and years of rumors and development, PlayStation fans might finally see Uncharted and The Last of Us on the big screen. Today, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) announced that it has opened PlayStation Productions, a brand new film studio dedicated to bringing its first-party titles to life on both the big screen and the small screen.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new studio is set to be head by Asad Qizilbash, Vice President of Marketing, Exclusive Games at SIE, and will be based in the Sony Pictures lot in Culver City. While the exact list of projects that Sony wants to adapt have not been announced, the company did say that the first slate of projects are already in some form of production.

Of course, given the fact that movies based on both Uncharted and The Last of Us (two major Sony first-party titles) have been in a sort of development hell for some time now, it wouldn’t shock me if they both make a resurgence at this new studio, depending on how committed Sony is.

Qizilbash spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about producing these projects in house, as opposed to the industry standard of lending them out to other companies via license.

“Instead of licensing our IP out to studios, we felt the better approach was for us to develop and produce for ourselves,” says Qizilbash. “One, because we’re more familiar, but also because we know what the PlayStation community loves.”

While this news mostly came out of nowhere, it’s not really unexpected. Video game movies have been trying to get off the ground for years and considering the most recent example, Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, seems to finally have broken the curse, it should come as no surprise that others are trying to kick it into high gear.
