With the slow agony of the PS Vita, Sont might be looking to bolster PS4 remote play on smartphones, that is still seen by many as a rather obscure feature due to the limitation (at least officially) to Sony’s own Xperia Models.

Today, Sony Mobile Communications announced XMount, the new generation of mounts designed to attach Xperia smartphones to a DualShock 4 controller. A while ago, Sony launched the GCM10 Game Control Mount, but due to the suction mechanism, it wasn’t exactly the best solution.

The XMount is similar, but it replaces the suction gimmick with a more secure sliding bracket similar to a few third-party options already on the market. Another difference with the previous model is the lack of obstruction for the lightbar that shows the connection status.

Incidentally, the design has been created by MSY, that works with companies like Thrustmaster and Razer. The release window for Japan is June 2018, while no announcement has been made for the west for now.

Compatible Xperia models are the Xperia XZ1, Xperia XZ1 Compact, Xperia XZ Premium, Xperia XZs, Xperia XZ, Xperia X Compact, Xperia X Performance, Xperia Z5, Xperia Z5 Compact, and Xperia Z5 Premium.

Of course, what would really help the feature take off would  be opening it to all brands of smartphones, pretty much like Sony has done with remote play on PC, but unfortunately, nothing has been announced on this front.

In the past few months, Sony has released a few videos and trailers to advertise the remote play feature. It’ll be interesting to see if they’ll expand it further, now that the Vita is on its last leg even in Japan.
