Sonic Mania Dev Kickstarter for 2D Retro Platformer “Vertebreaker” Cancelled

News, Originals, PC, PS4, Sega, Sonic Mania Plus, Switch, Vertebreaker, Video, Xbox One

A promising Kickstarter for a promising 2D platformer, with a pedigree of being worked on by one of the main Sonic Mania developers, tragically couldn’t find its success story. Vertebreaker was an upcoming hopeful that mixed fun looking 2D 16-bit graphics with Sega Genesis-like sound and style. Unfortunately the campaign only raised 5 percent of its total goal in a week, with momentum dropping to nothing very quickly.

As such Headcannon Games developer Stealth, real name Simon Thomley, confirmed on both the Kickstarter page and a new video that he was officially cancelling the campaign. Citing that it was a “spectacular failure” he states the reasons for its failure in the video below, before thanking each of his 480 backers that pledged $13,996 of the $275,000 needed to realize the game’s creation:

Stealth also stated in the video that he would love to revisit the game at a future time once they restructure the entire campaign. His last update for the Kickstarter campaign goes as follows:

Although we appreciate each of the many people who backed us, this campaign was an overall failure. In the first few minutes of this video, Stealth goes into detail about why the campaign was handled the way it was. The rest is dedicated to all of our backers.

We apologize, and hope to see you all again if we’re able to return to you in the future with a better campaign.

Sonic Mania Plus is the latest installment of the surprise hit title, Sonic Mania. Both Sonic Mania Plus and the Encore DLC Pack launched back in July of last year for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The definitive edition introduced two playable characters into the mix: Ray the Flying Squirrel and Mighty the Armadillo.

You can check out our review of the title here as well as a dev diary focusing on both art and design. Specifically the video focuses on Tom Fry, the Art Director of Sonic Mania Plus, and Kazuyki Hoshino, Creative Director at Sonic Team.
