The time is finally upon us. After a slight delay, Shenmue 3 will finally make its way to store shelves on November 19. To celebrate its release, the Shenmue 3 launch trailer has been unveiled bringing a whole lot of melodrama and kung fu to PS4 and PC.
In the trailer above, it seems the series’ protagonist Ryo Hazuki is still on the hunt for his father’s killer, this time in rural China. The trailer is interspersed with moments with Shenhua Ling, who shares a special bond with Ryo, as well as fight scenes, one of which featuring the series’ antagonist Lan Di.
While I may not have played the Shenmue games myself, I do know three things about this series:
- It influenced open-world games.
- It popularized the quick time event.
- It had forklifts.
While the forklifts did not make an appearance in the Shenmue 3 launch trailer, it was confirmed earlier this year that the game will have forklifts. As expected, it will also be within an open world and include quick-time events.
While it has taken years for Ryo’s story to continue, Shenmue 3 will not be the last entry in the series. While this new entry will see Ryo get his revenge on Lan Di, game director Yu Suzuki implied that there is still more story to tell.
Yu Suzuki launched a Kickstarter campaign for Shenmue 3 back in 2015. It was able to garner $2 million in just under seven hours. By the end of its campaign, it raised over $6 million on Kickstarter. It was supposed to release earlier this year in August but was delayed to the November 19 launch date. At the very least, fans have been waiting for four years for this game to come out.
