During Gamescom 2020, Rare revealed that a new update arriving to Sea of Thieves in September would introduce dogs as in-game pets and a brand-new permanent voyage type for the Gold Hoarders. Last night, the studio announced a new titled update called Vaults of the Ancients and should be launching on September 9.

Vaults of the Ancients finds the story picking up after the events of the Shores of Gold update, and basically, pirates needed a place to store their treasure. They used the ancient vaults that are scattered around the map, but to access them players need to locate keys. Player’s get to choose to return the keys or they can go and use them themselves and reap the rewards that lie within the vaults.

Inside the vault, there will be a timed challenge in which players need to gather scattered medallions in the room quickly to use on a special table that reveals the answer to a puzzle. Completing this will give access to a valuable chest.

Sea of Thieves will also see some quality of life updates that will come alongside the titled update. One of those will be a less intrusive design that shows players a different presentation of island banners when they get near to them.  Additionally, players who enable the single-stick mode —introduced in a recent update— for accessibility will be able to toggle between movement and camera control.

Rare has recently released Battletoads, and unsurprisingly, the studio is giving away a free “Fighting Frog” ship livery in-game. However, to unlock it players need to complete act one of Battletoads. It’s also noted that on September 19, Rare is celebrating the International Talk Like a Pirate Day and has a bunch of things planned. What those are exactly have not been revealed as of yet.

In addition to the above, there will be Mysterious Notes that will be added to a player’s inventory at the start of each session and acts as a suggestion on what to do. This means that some notes may suggest you go off and participate in a real-time event, and some might suggest you go off and find a special hidden treasure.

Sea of Thieves is available on PC and Xbox One.
