If you’re still enjoying sailing the seas in Rare’s Sea of Thieves, then you’ll find yourself today being able to jump into the game and experience the new ‘Seasons’ system that was previously announced last month.

The Seasons update will begin today, January 28, and each season is planned to last for roughly 3 months. During each season, new gameplay features are introduced, new rewards are available to earn, and there are going to be a bunch of new live events to participate in.

A new progression system is also introduced to the game, finding players earning Renown by turning in discovered loot and through other methods. As players earn Renown, they’ll progress through 100 levels with 10 tiers of progression to unlock.

For this season, it’s detailed that a new Merchant Alliance Voyage is introduced to the game along with some events and challenges (Known as Trials) to complete throughout the duration of the season. The more a player levels up, the more rewards they earn. In this case, rewards can be anything from in-game currency, emotes, cosmetics, and Ancient Coins. More information on the seasons has been detailed in an official blog post and the video below.

Another addition that comes with today’s update is Plunder Pass. While players can earn free rewards through the progression system, purchasing the Plunder Pass will grant them access to premium rewards on top of those. To purchase the Plunder Pass, players will have to spend 999 Ancient Coins, an in-game currency that can be purchased as packs from the in-game store or obtained through defeating rare ancient skeletons.

Each new season will introduce a new Plunder Pass, and will also allow players to unlock early access to upcoming cosmetics that will be available in the Pirate Emporium at a later date.

Sea of Thieves is available on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
