At X018’s Inside Xbox event, Rare announced the next content update for Sea of Thieves, The Arena, will be coming early 2019.

First, we saw a trailer giving us a glimpse of just what The Arena will bring to Rare’s open-world pirate adventure game. According to the trailer, the new competitive mode seems simple: fight rival pirate crews and earn the most treasure.

Next, Rare’s Studio Head Craig Duncan and Executive Producer Joe Neate sat down on stage at X018 during a special edition of Inside Xbox to further detail the new mode for Sea of Thieves. When you begin the game, you’ll either choose to go into Adventure mode or Arena mode on the front menu. According to Neate, it will allow players to get “competition on-demand” within a shorter session. Neate also mentions that it is “condensed down” but what that exactly entails is unknown. It will also introduce a new Trading Company, the Sea Dogs

The developers of Sea of Thieves will have a panel tomorrow where they will talk more about what’s to come for the game. This will include Shrouded Spoils, the next update coming later this month.

Sea of Thieves was announced back in 2015 alongside an announcement trailer. It flaunted some cooperative first-person piratey action indicative of what the final product would become. It wouldn’t be until three years later, in March 2018, where we would actually get our hands on it. If you want to see what we thought of the game, you can check out our review.

Since release, there have been plenty of updates and improvements made to the game, namely the named content updates that added new features to the game. This includes The Hungering Deep, Cursed Sails, and most recently, Forsaken Shores which expanded the map to include the volcanic Devil’s Roar region.

Sea of Thieves is available now for Xbox One right now. If you are a subscriber to Game Pass, you can play now without an extra fee.
