When talking about big game developers, your average gamer will go straight to Sony, Insomniac, Nintendo, Naughty Dog, and other similarly acclaimed studios. However one always manages to slip the mind – Jagex, the creators of the online fantasy MMO Runescape. However, it seems like some large management firms haven’t forgotten about the company, as it’s been sold once again, this time to the tune of $530 million.

According to a press release from the English developer, Jagex was purchased by Macarthur Fortune Holding LLC, an asset management company. The purchase was made through one of Macarthur’s private funds, Platinum Fortune, which is focused squarely on the global video game market. The developer was sold off by Shanghai Hongtou Network Technology, a company in the games firm Fukong Interactive Entertainment. According to the same press release, Platinum Fortune “targets global video game companies and designs strategies to help them grow user base and revenue” in order to make a better gaming experience for the world’s gamers.

For now, it doesn’t seem like much will change at Jagex. The developer is set to stay headquartered in Cambridge, UK, and continue working on Runescape, which reached its peak player count just last year. Runescape Mobile also made its debut last October, which surely boosted the MMO’s numbers.

Jagex CEO Phil Mansell expressed his excitement for the potential that being purchased by Macarthur is bringing his company. “The combined strength of Macarthur Fortune and Jagex will both support and enhance our strategic plan to deliver great gaming experiences to our communities of RuneScape players and build on our portfolio with more living games for a global audience,” said Mansell.
