In a recent press release, Capcom celebrated RESIDENT EVIL 7: biohazard taking home the award for Best VR Audio at the 2018 Game Audio Network Guild Awards (G.A.N.G. Awards). In addition to the achievement, the company also announced that RESIDENT EVIL 7: biohazard has sold 5.1 million units as of March 31, 2018.

These are very good numbers for the latest entry in the Resident Evil series considering the game has only been out for a year, though it has still sold less than most other mainline entries in the series. Resident Evil 6 has sold roughly ten million units since its release back in 2012.

There’s been no shortage of praise for RESIDENT EVIL 7: biohazard despite its marked changes from the traditional style of most other Resident Evil games, featuring a first-person perspective not really seen in the series. RESIDENT EVIL 7: biohazard has also released a Gold Edition, bundling all the released DLCs in a definitive version available for purchase now.

As for the sound design of the game, Capcom goes on to describe the process of recording sound effects in the company’s Foley stage, utilizing the Yamaha Corporation’s ViReal™ stereophonic sound technology to produce the bone-chilling sounds and murmurs found in the game. Winning Best VR Audio and selling such excellent numbers may encourage Capcom and other companies to explore VR technology a bit more wholeheartedly, but at this point, that is only speculation.

Resident Evil 7: biohazard and its various DLCs are available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC — and you can grab that Gold Edition on sale over at Amazon. The game can also be played while using the PlayStation VR headset.
