While the PS4 has already been known to have a commanding lead over its competition this generation, the holiday season in 2018 seemed to be particularly strong for Sony this time around thanks to a strong roster of first-party games and a diverse selection of third-party titles. That being said, holiday 2018 did prove to be a strong one for Sony, as the company has now revealed some statistics from the PS4’s sixth holiday season, which might have been one of its best yet.

Sony has announced that as of December 31, 2018, the PS4 has sold through over 91.6 million units worldwide since its release, with the system having come off a particularly strong holiday season in the past few months. Overall, Sony marked that sales of the PS4 reached over 5.6 million units worldwide during the holiday season.

Outside of the new hardware stats from Sony, the company also revealed several other statistics on the software side of things, with the most notable stat being that Marvel’s Spider-Man surpassed over nine million copies sold globally, as of November 25, 2018. In overall software sales, Sony reported over 50.7 million PS4 games being sold globally during the holiday season, for a total of 876 million PS4 games sold worldwide in the system’s lifespan, accompanying for both physical retail sales and digital game sales through the PlayStation Store. On the same note, over 90 million PlayStation Network users have been accounted for on the service, as of November 2018.

With the PS4 having sold over 81 million units when it was reported back in August, holiday 2018 proved to be a very fruitful one for Sony as we’ve seen from its strong hardware and sales performance this time around, especially given the strong year of first-party games that Sony had for this year such as God of War and Marvel’s Spider-Man. However, third-party games were certainly as strong this year thanks to the release of majorly anticipated titles like Red Dead Redemption 2, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and many more.

With the PS4 now entering its seventh year on the market (and a fairly quieter year when it comes to first-party games, potentially), all eyes will be on Sony as the system (presumably) enters its final year or two before the next major hardware release from the company. However, the PS4 has at least one more shot of climbing to the lofy goal of over 100 million units sold before its time on top ends.
