Believe it or not, the PlayStation brand is turning 25 years old tomorrow. The PS1 launched on December 3, 1994, in Japan before later coming to other territories the following year in 1995. To mark the significance of tomorrow’s date, current SIE President and CEO Jim Ryan shared a new message to thanks fans for their support over the years.

Seen via the PlayStation Blog, Ryan’s post looked back at the history of the PlayStation brand and his own journey with the company. “Over the past 25 years, PlayStation has stood at the forefront of gaming, and I’m honored to have been a part of the team since the early days,” Ryan expressed. “Supported by passionate fans all around the world, our business has grown significantly and our focus on community is more important than ever.”

Ryan continued thanking fans saying, “It’s truly humbling to see fans who grew up on PlayStation passing down their love of gaming to their children, who are now playing on PS4. On behalf of all of us at PlayStation – thank you for taking this journey with us. We can’t wait to celebrate what comes next with you!”

The message from Ryan is a kind one, but it’s also a bit anticlimactic. At the start of the year, many theorized that Sony would do a bit more to go all-out and celebrate PlayStation’s 25th anniversary, especially after it was announced that they’d be skipping E3 2019. I even thought that they might bring back PlayStation Experience, the fan convention dedicated to all things PlayStation to celebrate the occasion. Alas, nothing grand ended up transpiring after all, which seems like a bit of a missed opportunity, in my own opinion.

Still, Sony has said that this isn’t all that it’ll be doing this week to celebrate PlayStation’s 25th anniversary. The blog post in question mentions that a “series of celebrations” will be going up throughout the week on various PlayStation channels. While it doesn’t seem like we should expect anything major from these celebrations, I’m sure they’ll provide plenty of nostalgia.

As for what’s next for PlayStation, the platform’s 26th year will see the arrival of the PS5 alongside other major first-party releases such as The Last of Us Part II. It should be a big year for the company and we still have a lot left to learn about what’s in store.

Here’s to another 25 years, PlayStation.
