Plants vs Zombies is a tower of defense strategy game that released ten years ago today. The game originally was developed and published by PopCap Games for OS X and Microsoft. PVZ about homeowners trying to prevent themselves from being eaten by zombies, by using a variety of plants to get the job done. With each level, the pace quickens, making things more challenging to defend yourself against the zombie hordes.

As a bit of history, PvZ first released on May 5, 2009, on Steam, then iOS in February 2010, and soon to follow was an Xbox Live Arcade version that released on September 10, 2010. PopCap later released a Nintendo DS version in February 2011, and a PS3 version with a co-op and versus mode also in February 2011.

Back in July 2011, Electronic Arts, also known as EA, picked up PopCap games, acquiring favorite games, Plants vs. Zombies, Zuma, and Bejeweled. Fan’s of Plants vs Zombies weren’t exactly excited about this considering EA’s reputation and with the release of Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time, the reviews were less than stellar.

It wasn’t so much of the gameplay of Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time that turned fans away, but it was the microtransactions that turned players off. And thankfully, the series has managed to continue in a fairly successful third-person shooting title.

Although the game wasn’t received as well as EA hoped, Plants vs. Zombies is arguably one of the best towers of defense games produced. As a player of PvZ, I couldn’t agree more, and I’ll admit to the countless hours I’ve spent and enjoyed taking down endless zombie hordes. Happy Birthday Plants vs. Zombies!
