Paper Mario-Like Bug Fables Nears Funding Goals, Debuts Gameplay Footage

Of any game in Nintendo’s lineup, arguably the most artistically distinct is the Paper Mario series. Built from the ground up with paper craft and kitschiness in mind, everything in the game feels like it was made in an arts and crafts project. With this in mind, it is impressive how much Indiegogo-backed game Bug Fables can nail that style. And as the game nears its funding goal, we get a more intense glimpse into gameplay and the crafting mechanics.

What is Bug Fables? It’s a (so far) lightly-publicized Indiegogo project by Panamanian indie developer Moonsprout Games. With a light bottom line of $20,000, Bug Fables has already cleared nearly 70% of its funding goal. The game is an Adventure Turn-based RPG following three bugs (Bee, Beetle, and Moth) in their search for immortality in Bugaria.

Though it may look like Paper Mario, it does have the spare touch of modern gaming — including action commands and a crafting-like cooking system. That system is the subject of the latest update, which shows a video crafting bombs and then using them later in combat:

As you can see, from graphic style to gameplay to sound design, this game feels emulated straight out of the world of Paper Mario.

Bug Fables — assuming it meets its fundraising goals — will launch exclusively for PC in June 2019.
