Nintendo Confirms Only Toadette Can Wear the Super Crown, Apparently Killing Bowsette Dreams

It doesn’t appear that Bowsette will make the leap from PornHub to official Mario canon any time soon. According to the official website for New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, only Toadette can use the Super Crown to turn into a Peach-like character.

Super Mario games always come with a variety of items, and the upcoming enhanced port for the Switch set the world ablaze with the Super Crown. Soon after, fan artists began imagining what would happen if Bowser were to take the Super Crown, turning into the now-famous Bowsette character. Since then, fan art and cosplay of this evil, sexy iteration of the straight-laced Princess Peach has taken over social media feeds.

The fan devotion to this creation didn’t stop at costumes and fan art, with DualShockers showing the world how to create Bowsette and even Boosette in Soulcalibur VI. It’s been fun seeing fans take the concept and put their own spin on it.

With that in mind, such a de-canonization doesn’t really matter to fans. Debates will always go on about who really has “ownership” of a product: the creator or the fans. Perhaps Nintendo will never make an official nod to Bowsette, but the character will live on through these fan creations.

You can’t stop the smut.

Plus, I still have reservations that it is entirely impossible for Bowser to wear it. The description on the website reads: “Sorry Luigi—only Toadette can use this item!” First off, leave Luigi alone—he didn’t ask to be called out like that. Second, I’d like to believe that this description only applies to playable characters of the game, and Bowser is not one of them.

Most modern Mario games end with a final boss battle where Bowser takes the main powerup from that game—Super Mario 3D World had Bowser as a cat, Super Mario Odyssey had Mario use Cappy to possess Bowser, etc. These always come as a surprise for the endgame, so having a surprise Bowsette final boss (though probably less risqué than fan interpretations) isn’t too far off.

We’ll soon find out once New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe releases exclusively on Nintendo Switch on January 11.
