Gaming Twitter briefly blew up this afternoon when out of nowhere, Ubisoft’s Julian Gerighty, the creative director of The Division 2, tweeted out that himself and fellow Ubisoft directors Dan Hay and Roman Campos-Oriola were all working on a new Splinter Cell game. He then added that he, “Can’t wait for E3,” and also posted some pictures of himself and the other directors who all looked to be drinking.
As you can imagine, the Internet immediately started freaking out not only because a new Splinter Cell game finally seemed to have been announced, but because of the way in which it was unveiled was so lackluster. The only problem with this story is that Gerighty is surely just screwing with people, no matter how evil that might be.
Not only would Gerighty have the foresight to know that he would be in major trouble if he were to reveal something like this, but the entire idea of what he’s trying to present makes no sense. Ubisoft would not consolidate directors from The Division 2, For Honor, and Far Cry onto a single project like this, even if fans wanted it to happen.
A representative from Ubisoft ended up essentially confirming to US Gamer the same thing, saying that Gerighty was just joking:
“Julian was obviously joking as Julian likes to do. It looks like our creative directors are having fun right now. We do not have any announcements to make at this time.”
So, to make a long story short, no, Ubisoft isn’t making a new Splinter Cell. At least not right now. Gerighty was just trying to play a joke on fans and it clearly worked. I’ll have to admit though, it was pretty funny watching everyone freak out in real time about this supposed announcement.
We’ll likely get a new Splinter Cell game at some point in the future, but this is by no means the proof that there is a game in development. We’ll be sure to wake you up from hibernation though in the future if that announcement ever does come about.
