Phoenix Point is the upcoming turn-based strategy game from the team at Snapshot Games. The studio, which names the father of X-COM Julian Gollop as one of its founders, is highly anticipated by fans of the genre. Fortunately, fans don’t have to wait much longer, as the game launches on December 3. To help drum up excitement, Snapshot Games released a new trailer highlighting the lore behind Phoenix Point. Give it a watch below.

Phoenix Point is set in the aftermath of a global apocalypse. The creatures of Earth’s oceans have been infected by an alien virus, which allowed them to walk on land. Then, the virus turned into an airborne mist that mutating everything in came into contact with. What is left of humanity has retreated to the high ground where they can stay above the mist. These outpost havens of the human race are ruled by various factions, with you serving as the leader of the Phoenix Project.

The Phoenix Project is a secretive organization that houses many of the best remaining soldiers, scientists, and engineers. As you interact with the other factions, you’ll have to build a team to fight back against the alien virus and restore humanity.

Phoenix Point has an incredible pedigree behind it. Seeing Gollop return to a genre he had a major part in creating makes this an exciting release. Obviously, X-COM: Enemy Unknown did a lot to modernize the genre. That said, getting Gollop’s modern take will, at the very least, be something worth paying attention to.

Phoenix Point will release on Mac, PC, PS4, and Xbox One on December 4.
