During Take-Two Interactive Software’s financial conference call related to the first quarter of fiscal year 2018, President Chief Executive Officer Strauss Zelnick mentioned that NBA 2K17 is the publisher’s highest-selling sports title ever.
Zelnick also provided numbers, mentioning that the basketball game has sold 8.5 million units. The game has also been driving recurrent consumer spending, exceeding the company’s expectations during the quarter between April 1st and June 30th, 2017, growing 64% year-on-year.
According to Zelnick the series has been a “tremendous success” and the publisher believes that it can continue to grow both in unit sales and recurrent consumer spending in the years to come.
President Karl Slatoff also mentioned that the development team is working on the foundations of the NBA 2K eSports league in 2018. The publisher believes that the league has a long-term potential to be a meaningful driver of profit for the publisher.
Later in the call, Chief Financial Officer Lainie Goldstein mentioned that NBA 2K18 is expected to be “the largest contributor to net sales” in the quarter between July 1st and September 30th.
NBA 2K17 is currently available for PC, PS4, PS3, Xbox One and Xbox 360. NBA 2K18 will release for the same platforms on September 19th, adding the Nintendo Switch. The Switch version will launch day and date with the other platforms only digitally, while the physical release will come later in the fall.
