Earlier this year, 343 Industries and Microsoft announced that Halo: The Master Chief Collection would soon be coming to PC. This was an announcement that many had waited years to hear but perhaps the most surprising part of the reveal is that the game was also planned to be released on Valve’s Steam platform as well. As of today, Microsoft has said that this release won’t be a one-off thing for the company, either.
Alongside detailing Xbox Game Pass coming to PC today, Xbox’s Phil Spencer also talked more about the company’s plans to distribute more of its first-party titles to other storefronts in the future besides just that of the Microsoft Store. Spencer said that Microsoft wants to make its games available to the largest audience possible saying, “our intent is to make our Xbox Game Studios PC games available in multiple stores, including our own Microsoft Store on Windows, at their launch.” He went on to add, “We believe you should have choice in where you buy your PC games.”
Spencer went on to say specifically that Microsoft will be adding upwards of 20 games to Steam in the future. Of those titles heading to Steam, Gears 5 and the upcoming remakes of Age of Empires I, II, and III were all cited. Further titles weren’t mentioned, but there’s a good chance that we’ll learn more at E3 2019.
In a time where the PC community has been frustrated that its options are often times limited when it comes to where games can be purchased (primarily because of exclusivity deals with the Epic Games Store) it’s good to see that Microsoft is looking to break that mold and bring its own titles to more avenues than ever before. Even if you don’t think Xbox’s first-party lineup is strong, having a choice in where you want to purchase your own games is always a positive.
