Marvel’s Avengers releases next week starting with Ms. Marvel, Iron Man, Thor, The Hulk, Captain America, and Black Widow being the six main heroes of the story. Developer Crystal Dynamics has been transparent that as a live service title there will be microtransactions and now we know a little bit more as to what we can expect from the game’s “battle pass.”

Each hero will have their own “Challenge Card” which players will level through playing the game. All the starting heroes will have their challenge cards available to them once the game launches, but it is a different story for heroes that will be added later on. We already know that the first hero coming post-launch will be Hawkeye, who has been noticeably absent since the title’s first reveal at E3 last year. Additionally, Spider-Man is coming exclusively to PlayStation 4 (and PlayStation 5) which has brought major controversy across the gaming industry.

For new characters that are added, their challenge card will be locked requiring players to purchase the card for 1,000 credits which translates to $10. Don’t fret, however, as you will be able to earn credits in-game. Crystal Dynamics said today in the game’s latest blog post that players will be able to earn 1,000 credits in-game by reaching the maximum level of 40 for a challenge meaning you won’t need to spend money out of pocket. With six heroes out at launch that hypothetically will cover the first six heroes that will be added to the game.

Even though each hero added will be free, it is likely that some may find this challenge card as a sidestep to get players to spend money on the new heroes anyway. It is true that there will be specific items that will be locked behind the challenge card however I don’t see this any different as an expansion for another “games as a service” title.

Destiny 2 releases a new expansion every year that normally costs $40. If Crystal releases four new heroes a year then that is a similar comparison. Each new character brought to Marvel’s Avengers will have their own exclusive stories and content on top of the content already in the game. To me, that sounds worth the value if you are a consistent player. The main question right now is whether or not there will be numerous challenge cards per character in the long run. Challenge cards will never be swapped or timed, but we don’t know if new cards will ever come into play. If that ends up being the case then I wouldn’t be surprised if there ended up being a significant backlash.

There is still a fair amount that we do not know going down the line, but it will be interesting to see how Marvel’s Avengers is received in the coming weeks. There is still time to pre-order Marvel’s Avengers which releases for everyone on September 4, 2020, on PS4, Xbox One, Google Stadia, and PC.
