Life is Strange: Before the Storm will have a new dialogue feature that ups the rebellious sass.

According to Eurogamer, a dialogue feature called Backtalk has been added to the game’s dialogue system. How it works is by the player picking up on a specific word or theme that is mentioned during a conversation and then using said word or theme and throwing it back at the person you’re speaking to. A classic teenager move.

Apparently, there’s also an on-screen gauge that fills (or doesn’t) as you correctly backtalk somebody. Not only does this add a new layer to the game’s Telltale-style branching narrative, it also is a nice touch that feels at home when you factor in protagonist Chloe’s rebellions demeanor.

Eurogamer provided an example of the new feature in work, citing the part of game where Chloe is in conversation with a bouncer who is explaining to her that she’s too young to get into a gig, adding sardonically that it is past her bedtime. As always, you get a variety of ways to respond to this, but if you pick up on the bedtime remark you will unlock a Backtalk response. Backtalking, if done properly, can be used to Chloe’s advantage in conversations.

Life is Strange: Before the Storm is set to release for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on August 31st. It’s important to note that the game is a prequel to Life is Strange and is not Life is Strange 2Further, it is being developed by Deck Nine Games, not Dontnod Entertainment who developed Life is Strange and is developing its sequel.
