The trailer was released by Tetsuya Nomura himself on Twitter, alongside some new trolling comments. Here’s an explanation of what happened.

First off, Tetsuya Nomura announced the trailer’s release on Twitter a few minutes prior its release, most notably explaining it was supposed to be published in April.

Tetsuya Nomura: “Hello. It’s been a while. At midnight, we’ll publish a new KH trailer. It’s something we were planning to release in April, so it’s unrelated to the hot topic overseas right now, or the thing that was a hot topic a little while ago. It’s a pre-announcement because it’s late. here’s a hint! OOkuji (Signed Nomura)”

The “hot topic overseas right now” definitely pointed out to the Memory of Melody logo leak. While the “hot topic from a little while ago” would be Dark Road. the OOkuji hint referred to a Ichiban Kuji, the online lotteries to win goods, also announced in the trailer. Basically, Tetsuya Nomura hinted that the trailer would have nothing but the announcement of new goodies, and would be unrelated to Melody of Memory and Dark Road, and yet… Check it out right below.

At midnight JST, along with the YouTube link for the trailer, Tetsuya Nomura tweeted the following:

Tetsuya Nomura: Thanks for your patience. As you can see there’s still some KH content planned for the second half of 2020. I’m working on various things. Take a look at the text I wrote displayed at the beginning of the trailer too.

As you can see, that trailer was supposed to be an April Fool’s published on April 1st, with the initial Melody of Memory reveal acting as if it’s a rhythm game, before revealing it’s actually a brand new entry, probably focusing on Kairi and Namine, coming 2020.

Update: Famitsu and Japanese outlets specified Kingdom Hearts Memory of Melody is indeed a rhythm game, and includes both the rhythm game footage and the Kairi story bits seen in the trailer. The rhythm game part isn’t a late April Fools. Melody of Memory really is a rhythm game, the first one in the Kingdom Hearts series, and the first KH Switch game.

Tetsuya Nomura mentioned back when the Remind DLC released that more Kingdom Hearts was coming soon.
