The developers of Kena: Bridge of Spirits mentioned their game will be darker than it looks. Micheal Grier, Chief Creative Officer, and his brother Josh Grier, Chef Operating Officer, made an appearance at Future Games Show 2020. In the video interview, the duo revealed a bit more on Kena.

As a Spirit Guide, Kena will regularly rescue trapped spirits. She will do so by triumphing in battle, solving puzzles, looking for clues in the environment. Ultimately learning the spirit’s past to be able to help them accordingly. Players will also need to grow their team of Rot, the small spirits accompanying Kena. The more Rot you have, the stronger you’ll be. It’s a bit similar to Pikmin, as they can also carry objects or unlock you new abilities.

The Grier brothers also stressed out how Kena: Bridge of Spirits will include multiple darker themes in its storytelling. Despite its cute looking-atmosphere.  They cited as an example the game’s opening movie, which features Kena meditating and battling ominous-looking spirits.

Personally speaking, media with a cute ambience actually dealing with dark themes is something I’m used to, as it’s often seen in Japanese works. Japanese children anime in particular always have developed stories and darker themes adults can enjoy too. And I enjoy that. So I’m looking forward to Kena: Bridge of Spirits even more now.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits was revealed at the PS5 Future of Gaming event on June 11. The game is planned to launch on PS4, PS5, and PC via Epic Games Store. Kena will be a timed exclusive to consoles and will launch later on PC. The PS5 version will use the DualSense controller’ Haptic Feedback vibrations for an enhanced experience.
