Yesterday Senran Kagura fans from the world over were left baffled when the official Senran Kagura livestream hosted by Marvelous Entertainment and Honey Parade Games was suddenly interrupted by YouTube citing a violation of the policies on nudity or sexual content.
The stream was airing from Akihabara, Tokyo, with Producer Kenichiro Takaki, a couple of voice actress, and a gravure idol in attendance. We can’t really say that it was safe for work, even if no actual nudity was shown. Yet, with Senran Kagura that’s pretty much par for the course.
The livestream was cut short by YouTube after the presentation of the first gameplay of the new Nintendo Switch game Peach Ball: Senran Kagura, when the ladies in attendance engaged in a real-life re-enactment of the game using their cleavages as the target for ping-pong balls.
That being said, YouTube did not completely manage to erase the scandalous display, as the stream was simultaneously aired on Nico Nico and the popular Japanese streaming service tends to be quite a lot more tolerant of this kind of content. While Nico Nico’s video quality is questionable at best, which means that it’s used mostly by a Japanese audience, it does come with a nice feature. At the end of each livestream, it requires the audience to vote on whether they liked or not the broadcast. This lets us find out how the Japanese fans watching on Nico Nico felt about the stream that YouTube found so egregious. You can see the result below.
81% of viewers voted “very good,” 11.0% voted “good,” 2.7% voted “so so,” 1.7% voted “bad,” and 3.5% voted “very bad.”
That’s a full 92% positive sentiment generated by the livestream. Looks like it wasn’t so bad after all, at least for the overwhelming majority of the Japanese audience.
On top of that, it’s worth mentioning that part of the audience might have expressed a negative vote due to the lack of a release window and footage of Senran Kagura 7even for PS4. If that was shown, it’s likely tat the result would have been even more one-sided then it already is.
At the moment of this writing, YouTube has not restored the livestream, and there is scant hope that they ever will.
