The latest revenue and earning numbers were revealed for miHoYo‘s blockbuster Genshin Impact. The free-to-play, open world, action RPG, as of March 2021, five months after the release date of Genshin Impact 1.0, has earned over $874 million.

Genshin Impact is currently the third biggest mobile game worldwide. After Honor of Kings by Tencent, and PUBG Mobile, also from Tencent. In fourth position we have Pokémon Go by Niantic, and Roblox from Roblox Corporation in fifth position.

How Much Genshin Impact Earned Since Launch, By Country?

China is the biggest revenue generating country, with $253 million. In second position we have Japan with $237 million, and in third position the United States with $162 million. In total, Genshin Impact has over $620 million of its revenue coming from outside China, 71% of the revenue in total.

Genshin Impact was first launched by miHoYo worldwide on September 28, 2020. The game received several Beta Tests before release. While it was initially criticized as a Zelda Breath of the Wild copycat with less ambition, Genshin Impact managed to prove its worth.

Genshin Impact also faced several controversies at launch. Most notably false claims regarding spyware attributes. And other false allegations about stealing passwords through clipboard snooping on iOS.

Genshin Impact‘s success is definitely justified, it’s a great JRPG, with good action RPG and open world mechanics. The story is particularly gratifying and dense. The gacha system isn’t overbearing, its very free to play friendly and the characters obtained for free are all particularly viable and useful even for endgame content.

Why Genshin Impact Makes So Much Money?

It’s definitely thanks to its characters that Genshin Impact makes so much money. As players spend cash to buy Genesis Crystals, converting them into the game’s main currency, Primogems, to pull on the character lottery, the gacha system, to obtain new characters. Otaku who fall in love with characters can spend high amounts for their favorites, with many incredibly high spending players called “whales”.

Genshin Impact will hold its ver 1.4 stream this Saturday. Some of the 1.4 changes were already detailed. Lastly, some of the information has supposedly leaked. I will be translating the stream live so stay tuned.

Genshin Impact is a free-to-play open world action JRPG, available on PC, PS4, PS5 via backward compatibility, and Mobile. The game was also announced on Switch, but has no release date on Nintendo’s platform yet.
