In an interview with PlayStation Access, Hideo Kojima says he expected mix reviews for Death Stranding.

“For me, the feeling [now that people are playing the game] is nothing really new,” says Kojima via a write-up from VGC. “Even with Metal Gear, I was always concentrating on coming up with something fresh for people to play, or showing them a new system of gameplay. So my approach is always the same. In terms of how I feel now people are playing Death Stranding – I believe there will be positive and negative reactions. This happens when you try to do something new, even in movies or games.”

Later in the interivew, Kojima clarifed previous comments he’s made about Death Stranding ushering in a new genre. He says he’s not trying to create a genre and that “genre follows afterwards and is for other people to name.” He reiterates that he just wants people to experience the game and then maybe a new genre will be named.

“If people are faced with something they haven’t experienced before, it can be challenging,” continues Kojima. “It was the same when I first did a stealth title. But I am hoping with the support I get from fans, that positivity will spread out. And that in 5 or 10 years people will look back at Death Stranding as a new standard. Then I’ll try and create something new again.”

While it’s only been out since November 8, the game has become the UK’s second biggest PS4 launch this year, with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare at number one. Speaking of review scores, the game has a Metacritic score of 83. Additionally, Kojima recently received two Japanese Guiness World Records for being the most followed game director on Twitter and Instagram.

Death Stranding is available now on PlayStation 4. You can watch the full PlayStation Access interview with Kojima below.
