With Super Smash Bros. being the strange, cultural phenomenon it is, it shouldn’t be too surprising that the latest Direct presentation for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate inspired some widely circulated joke images. “Memes” is what I think the kids call them these days, and I’ve been tasked with compiling some of the funniest ones for your own enjoyment.
Most of these are inspired by the Infinity War-esque doom beams of light that pretty much offed everyone in one fell swoop in the cinematic trailer for the game’s adventure mode. Perhaps it is just my bias as loving the cartoon as a child, but most of the memes found on Twitter and Reddit are solely Spongebob Squarepants-based, no kart racing to be found here.

Luckily, other animated shows like The Simpsons and King of the Hill were able to join in the fun as well.

Live-action shows like Drake & Josh and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia are usually primed to act as meme fodder in cases like this.

Meanwhile, we mourn the deaths of all Smash Bros. characters—no, not the ones who didn’t make the roster, but everyone who got beamed up, besides the lone survivor of Kirby.

Finally, just to circle back to Spongebob one last time, let us revisit the ultimately fake “Grinch leak.”

That isn’t even mentioning some impressive and funny trailer mash-ups, including an Avengers: Infinity War mash-up and our own Kingdom Hearts mash-up, courtesy of my nemesis (and Editor-in-Chief) Lou Contaldi.
