The latest update for Half-Life: Alyx arrived yesterday, bringing the version number to 1.4. While the majority of the update is just bug fixes, there’s a new physics element added that shows off something else the Source 2 engine can do well.

Bottles found around the world of Half-Life: Alyx in City 17 now have liquid inside that reacts to the player’s movements. It actually sloshes around inside of the bottle in a way that feels realistic.  What’s more, if the player shakes the bottle hard enough, it actually causes some types of liquid to foam.

For those really into detailing, the translucent liquids also show off light scattering or whatever the technical term is for light going through a form of sorts. It’s certainly an impressive, pointless addition that serves no purpose other than to allow players to shake bottles of liquid.

As you can see below, different bottles have different types of glass and liquid which can be easily noticed by holding them up to the light that pours into the room. There also appears to be an image from Jaycie on Twitter as you can see below, showing a bottle foamed up, and honestly, I’m so impressed by the sheer…fluidity of this liquid simulation within the Source 2 engine.

If you’re curious about other changes to the update, v.1.4 adds subtitles in more languages, brings up the UI quicker when returning from menus, and improves addon management UI. You can find the full list of bug fixes here. As for the game, recently Valve announced that the Steam Workshop for the game is now available. If you’re still looking at getting the game, it’ll require at least 67GB of free space and you can check out our guide on getting the best out of the game.

Half-Life: Alyx is available now for PC.
