Final Fantasy XVI is yet to receive its final rating from ESRP and PEGI, but a provisional label from PEGI reveals that the game has been rated for people above 18.

Recently, Square Enix has sent out some PR emails around Final Fantasy XVI which contains a PEGI rating at the bottom. According to the emails, the game has been rated for people over 18 in Europe which corresponds to M for Mature in ESRB rating. Of course, sometimes there are differences between the rating scale of ESRB and PEGI, but most of the time they are on the same page. Also, it should be clarified that the PEGI rating could still change as the game hasn’t reached the final stages of production yet.

A Final Fantasy game with a mature rating is something very rare in the franchise. However, it seems the new entry will feature a darker and bloodier setting, probably accompanied by other +18 themes that might turn it into an intense experience compared to all the previous Final Fantasy games.

Final Fantasy XVI is the next big project coming from Square Enix that targets an exclusive launch on PS5. The game was officially revealed during Sony’s latest PS5 Games Showcase earlier this month, but there are still way more details that should be announced about the game.

Recently, Jason Schreier claimed that Square Enix has been working on Final Fantasy XVI since 2016 and it will be launched sooner than expected. If it turns out to be true, the game has started its development process soon after the launch of Final Fantasy XV. Some other reports suggest that the new Final Fantasy is being developed by the team behind Final Fantasy XIV.

Aside from Final Fantasy 16, Square Enix is also expected to launch the second part of Final Fantasy VII Remake sometime during the 9th generation of consoles.
