Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster for the Nintendo Switch will require an internet connection for those who want to play X-2 and purchased the physical card for the game.

The fine print appeared on the Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster‘s website. Southeast Asia, however, will be receiving both games on their Switch cartridge according to Bandai Namco, talking to Nintendo Soup. This is different from the European, and now North American versions of the game. Both of those regions will receive a download code for Final Fantasy X-2 while Final Fantasy X will be playable on the cartridge.

Important information: FINAL FANTASY X HD Remaster available on game card. FINAL FANTASY X-2 HD Remaster game content is download only. Single-use voucher included. Internet connection required. microSD card may be required.

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster takes up about 7GB on PlayStation Vita, 23GB on PlayStation 3, and 32GB on PlayStation 4. Nintendo Switch cartridges can only contain up to 32GB of data, though a percentage of that is taken due to formatting. Nintendo reportedly pushed for larger capacity game cartridges but delayed them to 2019, so hopefully we will soon see a reduction of physical games requiring online downloads for the full experience. DOOM was a notable game that required a large download as the full game could not fit on the Switch’s default cartridges.

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster launches on April 16, 2018, with Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age coming soon after on April 30. Some other Final Fantasy games announced for Switch, as well as Xbox One, that have yet to be released include Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy IX, sorry Final Fantasy VIII fans! Final Fantasy X was the first game in the series for PlayStation 2, releasing in 2001, and Final Fantasy X-2 was the first direct follow up in the series, releasing in 2003.
