It’s Pokémon launch day, baby, you know what that means, time to spend several hours feverishly flicking your wrist to throw Pokéballs at a stubborn Mankey. While most of you have probably spent the day, you know, actually playing Pokémon Let’s Go, a distinguished scholar like myself spent the day staring at the game’s box art while I was at work. Lucky for me, Twitter user Nirbion created some stunning fan-made covers that pay homage to the original Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green box art.

For those of you not up to date on vintage Japanese box art, the original Japanese releases of Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green feature centered images of Charizard and Venusaur. Unlike the close-up action shots of the Western releases of Pokémon Blue and Pokémon Red, the Japanese box arts are slightly more subdued, even offering a content looking Venusaur rather than an angry Blastoise. In addition to missing out on the opportunity to gaze at Venusaur’s lovely mug, those of us in the West also missed out on a very cool image of a fire-breathing Charizard.

Nirbion’s downloadable covers capture the same aesthetic and overarching vibe of the original Japanese releases. In addition to recreating the box art in English, Nirbion has also helped create versions of the box art for Pokémon Let’s Go in Spanish and Japanese, with a French cover on the way.

You can check out the all of Nirbion’s fan-made covers at their Twitter account here. Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu and Pokémon Let’s Go Eevee are now available on the Nintendo Switch. You can purchase the games on Amazon here and here respectively.
