Daybreak Game Company, the developer formerly known as Sony Online Entertainment, juggles several different MMO franchises including PlanetSide, DC Universe Online and EverQuest. In order to give each of these franchises more creative freedom, Daybreak’s “franchise first initiative” has created dedicated studios created for all three of the aforementioned franchises.

The three studios are now named Darkpaw Games, Rogue Planet Games and Dimensional Ink Games. They will focus on EverQuest, PlanetSide and DC Universe Online, respectively.  Starting with Darkpaw Studios, Executive Producer Holly Longdale will continue to lead the EverQuest portion of Daybreak and “expand upon the amazing fantasy adventure that is EverQuest and EverQuest II and develop the studio’s next innovation.” The EverQuest franchise has had a very rocky decade, so I hope it can finally find its footing under Darkpaw Games.

Next up is Rogue Planet Games, which is focusing on the PlanetSide franchises. While PlanetSide 2 still has a dedicated fanbase, the original game was shut down a couple of years ago and PlanetSide Arena, a battle royale inspired game set in the universe, just closed its servers this month. For now, we can only hope that a true follow-up is in the works or that PlanetSide 2 support will be reinvigorated. Rogue Planet Games is being led by Executive Producer Andy Sites and Daybreak confirmed that it is also working on a “genre-defining game for fans of shooters.”

Finally, we have Dimensional Ink Games. DC Universe Online has been one of Daybreak’s more consistent IPs this decade; in fact, it recently came to Nintendo Switch. Headed up by Jack Emmert, this studio will not only continue to maintain DC Universe Online but has confirmed that it is working on a brand new “high-profile action MMO.” As a fan of DC Universe Online, this is the new studio that excites me the most as I want to see what new franchise Dimensional Ink Games has up their sleeve.

Daybreak Game Company definitely seems to be starting off this new decade on the right foot, so I look forward to seeing what all of these new studios have to offer. DualShockers actually interviewed the heads of all three studios too so you can expect to learn more about Darkpaw Games, Rogue Planet Games and Dimensional Ink Games from us soon.
