EarthBound was a game of its own style, even by today’s standards. It took the standard JRPG tropes and translated them into a modern-day equivalence. This lead to potions becoming hamburgers, cookies, and other sorts of treats. With Earthbound’s unique style and representation, this made the little 16-bit morsels look tasty. Apparently, Chef Bryan Connor and writer Hillary Froemel agreed, because they compiled the Mother’s Cookbook, which has tripled its funding goal on Kickstarter.
Mother’s Cookbook takes all the food in Earthbound and brings it to life, complete with pictures that basically look like HD versions of their early-90s counterparts, and of course, their recipes.
Their Kickstarter pitch reminisces on the SNES classic:
The game is set idyllic, yet satirical, version of America. Gone are the dragons and magic potions of classical fantasy games. In their place are angry ducks, hippies, and “All-American Foods” like cheeseburgers and pizza. […] The wacky and sometimes outlandish food in the game struck a chord with many of its fans, us included.
The book contains 50 original recipes inspired by the game’s characters, locations, and odd foods. Even the page layout is reminiscent of the original game guide. The book even has a range of beginner level snacks to high-level baked goods. It’s clear that the creators are really dedicated fans. It measures up 8″ x 10″ and will be available in hardcover, paperback, and digital form.
And by tripling the original funding goals, the team has blown past every announced stretch goal. These stretch goals include cocktail recipes (inspired by characters, PK/PSI powers, etc.), food from the Japanese localization, abstract “Moonside” recipes, an in-book art gallery, MOTHER 3 recipes, and more. They have even teased another stretch goal reveal, which is currently a mystery.
