Well, the moment that people have been waiting for the past year has finally happened. Diablo 4 was revealed at Blizzcon 2019.

A brand new cinematic trailer shows a group of raiders making their way through a supposed temple or tomb to find some treasure. It turns out it’s a gate and “blood is the key.” Then a whole lot of blood bending and ritual sacrifice occurs summoning Lilith from Diablo 2.

They also showed a few moments of gameplay featuring the first three classes from Diablo 4: Barbarian, Sorceress, and Druid. Yes, the Druid class will be coming back to Blizzard’s action RPG franchise fully capable of becoming a werebear and werewolf. It also looks like the maps have a bit more verticality as we saw the barbarian attack from a higher plateau to the ground below it. It was also noted that Diablo 4 will bring back PvP zones.

During last year’s Blizzcon, Diablo 4 was a lock in terms of what the audience was expecting to see at the show. Not only did Diablo 4 not show up, Blizzcon 2018’s “big final announcement” was Diablo Immortal, a mobile version of Blizzard’s action RPG. This bewildered fans and can be considered the start of many fan’s lack of trust in Blizzard.

Diablo 3 was the last mainline entry in the series. Releasing in 2012 for PC, it was a bit of a controversy with its auction house feature that allowed players to put items for auction that others could purchase with in-game gold or actual money. The auction house eventually was removed in 2013, around the same time it had its console release on PS4 and Xbox 360.

Diablo 3 would eventually come to PS4 and Xbox One in the form of Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition. This included the base game, as well as the Reaper of Souls expansion which introduced the Crusader hero and an increased level cap. This is the version that would come to the Nintendo Switch in 2017.

Blizzard’s action RPG is still receiving regular updates. The most recent update introduced Diablo 3‘s 18th season, the Season of the Triune. This brought new cosmetic rewards, journey rewards, and new seasonal conquests to the game.

Diablo 4 is being developed for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
